WINTER BLUES????

Are you suffering from the winter blues? Well I was ........ until Sunday!

Armed with plenty of warm clothing, tackle, sausage and bacon myself and Frank made our way up to the hut. It was a lovely crisp sunny morning with the ground covered in frost and a little ice in the margins. We manage to get the stove alight to warm the cabin and made ready with intermediate lines gold head hares ears.

On the third cast I was into my first fish, what a fight but sadly I lost it just before the net. A few moments later Frank was into his first fish only to find when he got to the net he had the double - a brown and a rainbow!

Two more fish later and we decided it was time to make back up to the cabin. After freshly cooked sausage and bacon butties washed down with a hot mug of tea we set out again. I managed another rainbow and a smaller brown before we returned home.

What a cracking couple of hours in the winter sunshine, neither of us expected to catch anything because of the cold but the fish were plentiful and ready for a fight!
With hindsight we would probably have done just as well with floating lines as the fish were not very deep.

So if the winter blues are getting you down, don't wait until spring time get yourself onto the water and enjoy the winter sport.

Hello my little fisher friends

I hope you have all survived the snow and are ready for some early season sport. We had to postpone the stocking in January as the waters were frozen over!! The fish will now hopefully be going in some time in February. I had a look up yesterday and the ice had almost gone so lets hope for some warmer weather.

A date for your diarys - Saturday 27th March 2010 for the annual dinner which I have booked at our usual venue, Simply Classic. I will contact members nearer the time with more details bt if anyone would like to discuss tat or any other matters please give me a call.

Hi folks,
Happy New Year and tight lines in 2010 to you all!!

I hope you are all recovering from the festive season and ready for a little sport on the waters edge. We will be stocking some time in January and look forward to some slightly warmer weather so we can enjoy some winter fishing.

A gentle reminder that subs, still a bargain at £135, are now due and should be sent to our treasurer, John Verity. If anyone needs Johns address please drop me a line.

We still have a couple of vacancies for new members so if anyone would like to join us please let me know. For those of you who are already members there are a couple of vacancies on the committee. Colder Water - Fitter Fish!!

Well if this is what putting rainbows in the lower reservoir is all about I am all for it!
For many years I have been miserable between the end of September and 15th March not being able to visit our lovely water. Not any more.
Like most of us I have caught a few rainbows this season and have been a little disappointed that they have not put up as much of a fight as the smaller brown trout.
However I went up today, a lovely sunny afternoon, to try some post September fishing. The water was considerably cooler but the sport was excellent! The rainbows, taken on black snatcher, black and pennel and small black dry are obviously suited to the cooler water and stripped line off the reel with ease, jumping many times high into the air - superb!.
I left with a nice brace each weighing two and a half pounds and look forward to more sport in cooler times to come, particularly in spring, stalking the over wintered ones.

Hi folks,
Just to let you know that this years AGM is to be held at the Pendle Inn, Barley, 7.30pm, Wednesday 4th November 09. The committee have a few idea's ready for next season but as this is your club, why not come along and have your say.
If you have any issues you would like raised and can't make the meeting then please give me a call to discuus matters and I will raise them on your behalf.
For all those who do come along and offer support, it is a good excuse to have a pint with friends and discuss all things fishy!!

Two friends of mine bought day tickets to try their luck at the back end of the season. So together we fished the lower reservoir in the morning with limited success, i.e. Ian netted two nice brownies of about 1lb. After a nice civilized lunch we set out to tackle the upper reservoir, and what an afternoon we had. The highlights being three cracking fish of 2lb +/- an oz or so, with a total of more than 30 fish between us, the majority going to Ian and John. Fish were taken on both wet and dry flies with the killer being one of Ian's black bob flies, size 14. A brilliant day was had by all, even the fish enjoyed it ( the big brownies being safely returned to the water ).

To extend the the enjoyment we get from our pastime/sport/passion the season on the lower reservoir has been extended to cover the full 12 months of the year.
So any member would wants to be frozen solid while practicing the black art of casting a line through iced up rod rings can now do so !
PLEASE NOTE. It is only the lower reservior that is open all year, the top reservior is still limited to the game season dates.

Top Res On Form!!!

Get yourself up there folks, the bottom reservoir good but the top is now is really on top form. A couple of us were up there last night and (until the heavens opened) it was great sport with Frank and myself taking seven fish each off both the dam wall and the left hand bank.

All were taken on floating line with twelve foot leader. Most combinations seemed to work from buzzers, diawl bachs, both gold and green. Parachute drys and sedges came on later did very well but tricky to catch fish on these flies. Loads of takes but not an easy task as the fish were nipping at the dries but heart stopping sport all the same.

I had a little success last Sunday and have been asked what I was using. My normal setup is a 4lb twelve - fourteen foot leader with two droppers on a floating line. I took a few fish with the Soldier Palmer on the top dropper, Diawl Backs on the second dropper and either a Pheasant Tail or Hairs Ear on the point. I nearly always use a slow figure of eight retrieve. Sometimes I will try a team of three Diawl Bachs again fished slowly.

However as the day warmed up I noticed the fish began to rise in large numbers but seemed to have lost interest in the above combinations. In frustration I switched to a pair of dry hawthorn flies, again size 12 and took three fish in fairly quick succession and on each occasion they hit the fly just as it dipped under the surface.

I definitely think that the rule of 'keep moving' especially if you are not catching is good advice.

There do not seem to be any hot spots at the moment on the bottom reservoir, all banks and the dam wall are doing well. My favourite spot on the top water is the left hand bank about three quarters of the way along near the inlet. My other preferred spot on the top is the right hand bank between the gate (in the dam wall) and the first bush

Season Under Way!!!

Well what a lovely start to the season today. Twelve members arrived to find almost perfect conditions. A cool breeze however made casting a little challenging as the morning progressed on some banks but the sunshine made up for that.

John & Ray frying bacon & egg butties in the cabin looked good and smelt even better but sadly they did not bring enough bacon to go round! Must remember to take some next time!!

Some lovely fish caught on the bottom res. A couple of us caught a fin perfect brace and new member Frank was snapped as he brought one to the bank. All fish were caught on a mixture of Black & pennel, Red arrow, crunchers and orange quill buzzers.

The upper reservoir was a little less productive but that is usually the way until the weather warms up a little.

Hope this is a sign of good things to come this season.

Black Moss Open Day

Just to give you a little advanced warning the BMFFA Open day has been booked for Saturday 30th May 09.

As I have mentioned in previous letters I have booked Mike Roden,
Professional fly fishing instructor & River guide for Salmon, Trout & Grayling. He is also a member of the Hardy/Greys Academy of Approved Instructors and Guides (07786 682272)

Mike has said that he will bring a selection of the latest Greys and Hardy tackle for us to try out so should be good opportunity to try out some new rigs on the water.

It would also be a good chance to invite friends along to sample our facilities. Always nice to see friends from other clubs or newcomers to the sport. The cost should be somewhere around £15 per head depending on the cost of the pie & peas.
